Taste, Where Art Thou?

{The elusive berry coffee cake}

For the past three days or so, I haven't been able to taste or smell due to this horrendous cold I have contracted. While I don't really miss the smelly side of life, the loss of taste is very unnerving and sad in a First World dilemma kind of way. For instance, I just went to Starbucks for a cup of tea and a slice of their crumbly, delicious berry coffee cake. I adore this cake (as much as one can adore a pastry from a giant coffee monopoly). As I had my cake, I realized that in place of the usual taste was a blank space. Instead, I was acutely aware of texture. My brain searched for that taste signal, but there was no dial tone at this number. I tried blowing my nose, hoping to release some pressure on the taste buds. Nada.

Sigh.

I wonder why I even bother to eat yummy things with this cold, but it's just that I hope there will be a breakthrough and the robust flavors will once again rush through my senses.

Then, I thought about the woman whose face was mangled in a chimp attack. She will never be able to taste, see, or smell again. In a few days, this cold will be over and I will be able to taste once more. So, in conclusion, I am going to offer up this little blip and step down from the taste soapbox and be thankful for all that I have been given. I am a lucky girl.

  1. Yes, well, I am glad you weren't mauled by a chimp, but it still sucks that you can't taste right now! I always hate that part of having a cold. People always say you lose weight, but I eat anyway...hoping I can taste something, ha!!!

  2. Oh dear, Emily. Hope you feel much better already. Yes, being unable to taste your food is a real bummer. Try Indian food. All those spices and heat with give the tastebuds a good blast!

  3. I hope you feel better SOON! I went through the same thing a month ago and it sucked. I love your attitude though - what a reminder that we're all so lucky!
